I just played through the game in one sitting. Took me three hours because of lots of places (Citadel, Mastabas, etc.) where I had no idea what I'm doing, and I was chatting too. (I streamed the whole thing for Apel & co.) My sprint technique has gone really bad! Either that, or I just don't know the levels very well anymore. :(

Anygays, my final in-game time was about 1:50:20 or something.

I found a post by rr_carroll on the old forums describing an easier ALT for Cleopatra's Palaces, performed by the oil pit. I used that, because I can't make the fastest way work, despite trying for hours. I also have a safe strat for City of the Dead. The ALT from The Sphinx Complex to The Mastabas is safe too thanks to a dummy flare.

The only really problematic ALT was the one in The Mastabas, which sometimes triggered a jackal for me.

That sounds like a damn good time, especially for single-segment runs. Do you want to run some IL's that way, or the whole game? Do you want to make videos, or just run it for the stats & your own satisfaction?

I was never able to do the ALT from The Sphinx Complex to The Mastabas, so the dummy flare sounds interesting.

You want me to coach you in the quickest way in Cleo's Palaces? It would help to see a video of a failed attempt, from the start of the level. A video of your safe strategy for City/Dead would be good to look at.

About Cleo's ALT: The problem seems to be that I can't throw the camera far enough. Ewil says on his video's description that he pressed roll, yet there is no flare-lit Lara to be seen in the distance. This suggests he manages to throw the camera further than me, as I always see Lara after rolling. I've tried all sorts of interval between the different button presses, but I can still see Lara every time.

City of the Dead: The safe strat is fairly simple, so I'll just describe it for you here. I used 2flare-creep to cross the slope to the left of the flamethrowers. (The slope points to the flamethrowers.) They do not spot Lara during the repeated embeddings. After a few squares, a slope pointing forward comes up. Once you reach that slope, simply jump off with a twist while drawing the grenade gun and fire away.


I should've mentioned I also lost a lot of time on Underneath the Sphinx, as I couldn't remember the combinations for the three switches, nor the route for the underwater maze, and I chose to solve them without a walkthrough.

I suppose I'll give it another go later. I won't be able to play at the moment, as I left my laptop home over the weekend so that I wouldn't have as much stuff to carry home once the semester ends. (This Thursday's the last day for me.)

Well, I embedded at the very corner like you suggested, and this time Lara can no longer be seen after rolling, so I guess I'm closer now. But I still can't trigger the end. I did once trigger a harpy though, so this still seems too unreliable for SS runs in my opinion. :/

You have to be aimed incorrectly to trigger a harpy. My memory says you play on PC, is that right? I'd really like to see a video of your attempt, but if you're tired of dealing with it, I can understand. Oh, I use a non-multipatched game, I wonder if that could make a difference? I don't know if Ewil does. I'm getting the feeling something may be different about our systems - I only see Lara in the wall after rolling if the ALT fails, and Fraps stops recording just as the ALT works, which is damn odd.

Would you happen remember whether Lara's looking too much to the left or too much to the right if the harpy triggers?
